Values in Action

We try to use our Christian Values to help us make decisions about how we should live. Our ‘Catch Me’ system helps us to focus our efforts one aspect of our worship value each week.  For example, for our focus value Generosity, we consider all the aspects of being generous such as; love others as we love ourselves, using your time to help someone in need, helping someone with a smile (without being asked), taking care of our school and community environment, being a courageous advocate and showing a generous heart and finding a place to be spiritual.  We are 'caught' when we show any of these values.

We have recently been a part of the team to redesign our local playground in conjunction with Hyndburn Borough Council. We used our Christian Values to think about what would benefit the whole community. We discussed what younger children might need in the park, and how it could be made accessible for those with disabilities.

We were interviewed for the local paper:

Today was an exciting day at school! We were invited to be guests of honour at the opening of the new playground at Knuzden Recreation Ground. We have spent a lot of time consulting and designing the new play space to ensure it meets the needs of our community. The School Council have worked alongside Mark from Hyndburn Borough Council for a number of months to make this happen. We hope you agree that it has been worth the wait...we certainly agree!

We have spent some time, in our class groups, thinking about how we might need to share our Christian values with others by putting our words into actions.  Some of the children decided that our local environment could be improved by encouraging others to help local pollinator populations.  As the pollinators help to support our environment and food production, we could create a virtuous cycle of improvement, benefitting all.   We created bug houses and re-planted part of our sensory garden to create a beneficial habitat for wildlife.

Every year, a class in Key Stage 2 takes on the challenge of hosting the Macmillan Coffee Morning.  We raise money for the Macmillan charity who help people living with cancer.  The school community comes together to bake or buy cakes of all kinds, then generously buys them all back to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee.  It is a wonderful social occasion too, enabling the old and young in our local community to spend some time in each other's company.
